After you’ve been to http://www.smallbusiness.xo.com/ and hired a part-time accountant you may feel like you’re getting close to opening your own small business. But if you’re a woman you’ve got a few extra steps to go – here are some of our suggestions for getting your business off to the right track:

1. Talk to Your Neighbors: It’s a great idea to establish a community in your area BEFORE you open the doors. Give away samples or coupons and generally just introduce yourself – people will know you’re the boss and not whatever man happens to be behind the counter that day.
2. Talk to Media: One of the best things about being a woman in small business is the novelty. IF you talk to local papers and magazines you’re likely to get a feature story – have something interesting to say about your business or the challenge of balancing family and work.
3. Hold Your Ground: It’s a tough start as a woman in business – be prepared to stand your ground. Get a good lawyer lined up and make sure to identify potential adversaries in the area before you’re up and running.

Being a woman in the business world is tough. There seems to be an entirely different set of expectations for woman than for men, and the sexism does run rampant. Business is typically a man’s world. However, I managed to work my way up to Senior VP of a well respected software company. I have some tips and things to avoid for those looking to do similar.

The first and most important thing is to never apologize for being a woman. What this means is that you should never give in to the idea that you are weaker than a man. On the other hand, you should not just pretend to be a man either. The people who try to dress like men and intimidate people like men get nowhere. As a woman you have a unique set of skills that the men don’t have. Leveraging those skills will lead you higher on the ladder than trying to be a sub-par man.

Survival in the business world is one of the most satisfying challenges a woman can take on. Instead of doing the things typically thought of, you can succeed in a world where you are already the underdog. Good luck in your question to become a businesswoman.

The world of business has always been affected by women even in cultures where women were not allowed to take part in owning or in operating a business. In the United States, women have changed the business world by taking an active part in owning, managing and making decisions in businesses that were traditionally considered the realm of men. Women have also managed and directed men as their superiors. A woman changes the business scene since she comes with attributes that are feminine and not masculine. Feminine attributes can be very impressive and a woman who has learned how to use her feminine attributes can be a very significant force in a business.
From the Betsy Ross’s who sewed the first flag and made it into a business, (Wasn’t she paid?) to Arianna Huffington who runs one of the biggest journalistic and news businesses internationally, women have changed the business world by adding their own attributes which sometimes refines the entire business world. The world of business without women is usually very practical and conservative. Practices like unfair labor against women and even children are continued as a matter of course because that is the way it is done. When women enter the business as managers and owners, unfair labor practices against women and children get attacked because women are the nurturing sex even in the world of business in the past, present and future.

Almost all of us want to be leaders in our field. We want to be recognized for the work that we have done, and we want to have a little taste of power. It is not easy to get into this position, but there are some things that you can do in order to make it start to work for you.

The first thing to consider is the type of connections that you are making. The more strong connections you have to people who are already important in the field, the better. These are often the people who will be making decisions about if you are going to advance or not. They are also the ones who can push things through for you.

Secondly, you are going to want to always put forth your best effort. There is nothing that wins people over as well as just doing good work. When you are doing this, people can tell that you actually care about what you are doing. This means that they are not going to think that you are worthy of leadership.

Finally, just make sure that you are forward and outgoing. Those who stay quite are almost never the ones that advance.

We are seeing a change in the business world. More and more women are emerging as leaders in a world that has traditionally been dominated by men. Women make up nearly half of the US labor force but have never really held a majority in positions of power. However, we are seeing an ever emerging presence of women at the top of the career ladder.

Just a few years ago 0 women held CEO positions in fortune 1000 companies. Today, there are 22. Women have also overtaken men in management and professional positions in business and now make up 54.4 of individuals in those positions.

All of these and more point to a new shift in women becoming more influential in the labor force. One place where this is most evident can be seen at the WBENC. The Women Business Enterprise National Council is dedicated to helping women succeed in business and has been accomplishing their mission very well. This year-s conference featured over 10,000 participants who came to learn and further the position of women in business. We are ever more seeing a level playing field for women to succeed. This has brought on a new face of business success and that face is of successful women.
